Manuscript Evaluations (Poetry and Prose)

I work with writers at all stages of their careers. I have published six books, and I have nearly two decades of editing, teaching, writer-in-residence, and mentoring experience. My passion is to assist authors at all levels with new writing.

How it works

Once we’ve decided to work together, I will calculate your costs based on the page count of your manuscript. Manuscripts can be submitted in .doc format, Times New Roman (12-pt. font), single-spaced for poetry, or double-spaced for prose. I read, edit, and return my comments on manuscripts (electronically) within eight weeks of our agreed-upon delivery date.

What you get

I will provide a detailed analysis (8 to 10 pages) of craft, cohesion, narrative elements (if applicable), and the use and effectiveness of literary techniques. While this is not an editing service, I may provide some substantive and copy editing, depending on the manuscript’s needs. If you’d like, I can offer advice about seeking publication for parts or all of your manuscript. Once you’ve studied my suggestions for changes and improvements, you have access to me for two hours of discussion and clarification via email, phone, Skype, or in person if possible. Following that conversation, our work together will be complete.

Costs

A flat reading/evaluation/one-on-one meeting fee of $375.00 plus $2.75/page applies per manuscript. For example, a 100-page manuscript would cost $650.00 ($375.00 + [100x$2.75 = $275.00]). When I receive confirmation of the transfer of funds, I’ll begin my work on your manuscript. NOTE: I do not charge the per-page fee for title pages, tables of contents, maps, charts, notes, illustrations, glossaries, or acknowledgements pages, though you should feel free to include them with your manuscript.

*Please do not send me your manuscript until we have agreed to work together.* When we have agreed to the time frame, the fee, and all other details of our work, I will invoice you and you may send your fee through this link. Payment must be made in full before I begin work on your manuscript. PLEASE NOTE that there are no guarantees that your book will be picked up by a publisher or agent following an evaluation.

Substantive Editing (Prose)

Substantive editing comprises a combination of intensive stylistic editing and structural editing. I will edit your manuscript with a careful eye toward a restructure (if needed), style, word choices, character development and consistency, plot consistency and logic, and any other substantive concerns I see (or which you may have asked me specifically to look for).

I will provide you with the edited manuscript either on hard copy or electronically, depending on your preference. Your work will be returned to you within eight weeks. You will receive one hour of consultation time to answer any questions that may arise following my edit of your manuscript, after which our work together will be complete. Costs

The cost of a substantive edit on your prose work will vary depending on your manuscript’s word count. Use the following as a guideline. These prices apply to manuscripts that are double-spaced and laid out in 12-point Times New Roman font.

  • 20,000–40,000 words: $1200.00

  • 40,000–60,000 words: $1700.00

  • 60,000–80,000 words: $2400.00

  • 80,000–100,000 words: $3100.00

Manuscripts under 20,000 or over 100,000 words will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Copy Editing (Prose)

If your manuscript has had a substantive (stylistic and/or structural) edit and you think it is ready to be submitted to a publisher or agent, a deep copy edit is essential in order to make the best possible impression. I will copy edit your manuscript with a detailed eye toward grammar, punctuation, structure, flow, and fact-checking for accuracy as needed. Your work will be returned to you (on hard copy) within eight weeks of our agreed-upon delivery date. I will also flag any substantive concerns that may remain. You will receive one hour of consultation time to answer any questions that may arise following my edit of your manuscript, after which our work together will be complete. My professional experience as a substantive editor and copy editor is

Costs

My copy editing fee is 2.5 cents/word. For example, a 50,000-word manuscript (including all notes, acknowledgements, tables of contents, and all other text) would cost $1250.00

Contact Me

Send me an email—kimmybeach@mac.com—and we’ll get started. Because of time constraints, though, I can’t guarantee that I can work with everyone who contacts me.

In your email, tell me about your writing/publishing experience, and give me a 200– to 300–word synopsis of your manuscript (working title, genre, themes, goals for publication), number of pages, and anything else you want me to know.
