Manuscript Evaluations

If you are an emerging writer—a poet, fiction or non-fiction author with a first book on the go, or a second you’d like to hone and brighten—I can help you. I have published five books, my sixth will be published in 2017, and I have nearly two decades of editing, teaching, writer-in-residence, and mentoring experience. My passion is to assist emerging authors with new writing.

How it works

Once we’ve decided to work together, I will calculate your costs based on the page count of your manuscript. Manuscripts can be submitted in .doc format, Times New Roman (12-pt. font), single-spaced for poetry, or double-spaced for prose. I read, edit, and return my comments on manuscripts (electronically) within eight weeks of our agreed-upon delivery date.

What you get

I will provide a detailed analysis (8 to 10 pages) of craft, cohesion, narrative elements (if applicable), and the use and effectiveness of literary techniques. While this is not an editing service, I may provide some substantive and copy editing, depending on the manuscript’s needs. If you’d like, I can offer advice about seeking publication for parts or all of your manuscript. Once you’ve studied my suggestions for changes and improvements, you may also have access to me for two hours of discussion and clarification via email, phone, Skype, or in person if possible.

Costs

A flat reading/evaluation/one-on-one meeting fee of $375.00 plus $2.75/page applies per manuscript. For example, a 100-page manuscript would cost $650.00 ($375.00 + [100x$2.75 = $275.00]). When I receive confirmation of the transfer of funds, I’ll begin my work on your manuscript. NOTE: I do not charge the per-page fee for title pages, tables of contents, maps, charts, notes, illustrations, glossaries, or acknowledgements pages, though you should feel free to include them with your manuscript.

Contact Me

Send me an email—kimmybeach@mac.com—and we’ll get started. Because of time constraints, though, I can’t guarantee that I can work with everyone who contacts me.

In your email, tell me about your writing/publishing experience, and give me a 200 to 300-word synopsis of your manuscript (working title, genre, themes, goals for publication, number of pages, and anything else you want me to know).

*Please do not send me your manuscript until we have agreed to work together.* When we have agreed to the time frame, the fee, and all other details of our work, I will invoice you and you may send your fee through this link. Payment must be made in full before I begin work on your manuscript.

Copyediting

If your manuscript has had a substantive edit and you think it is ready to be submitted to a publisher or agent, a deep copyedit is essential in order to make the best possible impression. I will copyedit your manuscript with a detailed eye toward grammar, punctuation, structure, flow, and fact-checking for accuracy as needed. I will also flag any substantive concerns that may remain. My professional experience as a substantive editor and copyeditor is
here.

Costs

My copyediting fee is 2.5 cents/word. For example, a 50,000-word manuscript (including all notes, acknowledgements, tables of contents, and all other text) would cost $1250.00
